Team Fatty News - 12 07 08 - Myndd Ddu. Team Fatty Hits'
the Welsh Champs.
Ok only did one practise day of this course and it put the fear
of hell into me, not good since I will be racing it this weekend.
Loads of riders loved it but I thought it was a little bit above
my ability but hey lets use this weekend for training ready for
the Team Fatty's outing to the Alps at the end of month.
Arrive after one of the wettest weeks in history can see its going
to be sludgy, opt to keep my high rollers on and keep the spike
tyres from The Bicycle Doctor Porth www.thebicycledoctor.com
for tomorrow race day. Get on the uplift contemplating all the way
the course that I don't like the drop-offs that don't seem to be
do-able Arghh!!!! Ok we wait for everyone to go and then we are
off team fatty are now en-route for the bottom, Paul Tambini from
9.8 team leads the way and then we follow him. I'm finding it challenging
but not at all as bad as practise day there was much more of a rhythm
there the drop downs were still being avoided by me though.
The waterfall or death shoot part of the course was still a hold
on think of Wales and hope for the best wow hit the bottom right
hander again, out of control and couldn't see how I could be in
more control both tyres packed up with mud and both slipping all
ways and my foot sliding across the floor. Overall I wasn't that
disappointed once I got to the bottom. Practise run one done and
I'm in one piece and so is the bike. The conditions and traction
were out of this world, the bike just slipped from root to root
and I shoulder barged from tree to tree to stay roughly on the track,
but hey it makes me feel alive and is more exciting than GOLF.
I do two more practise runs all about the same technique just be
glad when I'm alive at the bottom. Bit of excitement was on the
way up on the bus, we had to pull over to let the lorry pass but
oh no " I had her on full lock but she just slipped away from
me!" said the driver as we slid off the road. Luckily we stopped
just before the whole thing would have rolled over onto her side,
bit like the Italian Job but not as exciting. Then its down to Team
Fatty to put a bit of weight on the bus with Ieuan jumping up and
down on the back and Paul, me and several other keen racers pushing
at the front 2 minutes later and a stingy stung hand and the bus
is on its way and back up the mountain.
My seeding run, ok after three runs of this course my whole body
was fatigued but here goes I went for it but the conditions had
seemed to get slipperier. I managed to stay on apart from a couple
of major dib dabs. What was my time though. 6:31 wanted to break
into the 5mins but hey I wasn't the slowest. Iuean did 5:44 and
Paul a 4:47 Dan did 5:15, all down in one piece and ready to hit
racing again tomorrow.
Race Day - I'm hurting from practise day but first run down I come
off and hurt my knee which is my excuse for the rest of the day,
gotta have one and that's mine. Iuean and Paul are flying but hey
Ieuan follows Paul off the drop-down log so I thought yeah I can
survive that, nearly over the handle bars but I did it. Not like
Martin the big gay boy who didn't even like walking up the course.
Onto our first racing run, I'm nervous not as much as usual must
be getting used to it now, I take off on 5secs count recorded man
has spoken. I feel fast body hurting but am trying to keep off the
front brake as much as I can just letting the back of the bike drift
out, I'm through the rooted section and picking up speed I'm enjoying
it ( PLEASE let me break into the 5mins ) I get through the death
shoot without much drama and down to the bottom body is so tired
I have to lie down and wait for time. 6min flat 30sec off from yesterday
but one more second still eluded me. Paul had come off Dan had come
off and Iuean did the run without a chain, determination its great
to see.
Second race run oh ho. I'm tired I feel it straight away I make
error after error and loads of little spills slips and slides I
shouldn't have done so many test runs. I get to the bottom only
6:09 but there ya go I'm happy to be in one piece and the bike is
still working for the Alps.
Big news is though we have a Welsh Champion on Team Fatty, Daniel
Bowen has taken the title and is now the Welsh Champion 2008 in
the Juvenile Category, so well done mate that new bike works then.
